Smettes named Philanthropists of the Year

Known for their volunteer work with service clubs, disaster relief, business development, education and healthcare, Dave and Claudette Smette are passionate about making the community, and the world, a better place. Jamestown Regional Medical Center Foundation named the Jamestown couple its Philanthropists of the Year for 2017. JRMC presented the award to the couple at its Pillars of Giving event on Sept. 12. Dave Smette joined JRMC’s Foundation board in 2009. In addition to Smette’s work at Jamestown Regional Medical Center, he and Claudette are also active with the Jamestown Rotary Club, Jamestown Tourism Board of Directors, U.S. Small Business Administration’s local SCORE chapter, the Jamestown Community Foundation, American Red Cross and Jamestown Chamber of Commerce. Prior to his life as a full-time volunteer, Smette served as the superintendent of Jamestown Public Schools. “Dave and Claudette are role models for the community,” said JRMC Foundation Director Lisa Jackson. “We all should aspire to give back the way they do.” With the help of supporters like Dave and Claudette, JRMC constructed its new building in 2011. That dedication helps grow the future of care for the community. “It’s because of people like Dave and Claudette that JRMC can offer the services it does. Rural healthcare is possible because of the generocity of community members like them,” Jackson...

Gun Club Continues Dardis Legacy of Helping People

On Tuesday, July 12th, the Buffalo City Gun Club hosted the 2016 John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund “ City Shoot “. This event is a fundraiser for the John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund, an endowment fund administered by the James River Medical Center Foundation. The fund provides local hospice patients with items and sources to fulfil non-medical needs. In addition, every hospice admission at JRMC receives a Sherpa blanket from John’s gift fund. The endowment fund is an everlasting account and the interest earned provides the gifts that are given. The City Shoot has three trapshooting events – Singles Targets, Handicap Targets, and Doubles Targets. All the entry proceeds are donated to the John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund. The first event, Singles Targets, had fifteen shooters and $240 was generated toward the total amount to be given to the fund. There were three classes of shooters based upon their skill level. The winner in Class A was Chad Price with a score of 48 x 50. The Class B champion shooter was Dick Berland. His score was 45 x 50. The Class C winner was Clay Greenwood with a 46 x 50. In the Handicap event was entered by 12 shooters. Handicap shooting means that the shooter must stand back farther from the traphouse; the distance based upon the skill and ability of each shooter – the better you are – the further back you stand. Event 2 had two yard group classes. The winner in the Short Yardage Group was Jamie Edwards and the Long Yardage winner was Chad Price. Event 3 was 25 Pair of Doubles Targets. There were two Classes based upon the shooter’s ability. This event was entered by 8 shooters. In Class A, the champion was Chad Price with a score of 44 x 50. The Class B winner was Duane Burchill and his total was 42 x 50. Altogether there were 35 entries and a total of $560.00 was raised for the John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund. The Buffalo City Gun Club donated all the targets, employee wages and all other expenses pertaining to hosting this City Shoot. Thanks to all the diehard shooters who came out to shoot in the 40 mph wind to support the fundraiser for the Fund. There were JRMC door prizes furnished to the shooters but otherwise no trophies were provided. The winners will have their names engraved on the City Shoot perpetual trophy at the Buffalo City Gun Clubhouse. In addition to the City Shoot money raised, there was a separate donation from Jim Schumacher Jr. / Schumacher Construction in the amount of $300.00 and also an additional $140.00 donation from the Dardis Family to bring the total amount of $1000.00 to be presented to the John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund. If anyone would like to contribute to this John Dardis Memorial Hospice Gift Fund, just contact Lisa Jackson, JRMC Foundation Director at...
